Program Mechanics
The 3-week summer program is based on self-contained weeks of production. Each week starts on Monday morning and as the week progresses, original scenes, songs, choreography, sets and costumes are created with the help of our artistic director, visiting teachers, assistants and student interns. The program week culminates with a live performance every Friday evening, open to the entire Big Sur community.
There are no scripts, but the method developed creates all the dialogue through improvisation, and the results are always astounding. Myths, fairy tales, stories, books and movies are “re-worked”, sometimes beyond recognition: Snow White is an organic farmer, her evil stepmother planning a takeover; Cinderfella’s fairy godfather is Elvis Presley and the story is set in the 1950′s; Doña Quixote is a foreign exchange student at La Mancha High School and in Neverland the pirates are more interested in yoga and meditation than pillaging and plundering. Students are always encouraged to bring in and incorporate any creative ideas they have in keeping with the program’s desire to include all aspects of theater arts in the creation of the show.
Every student is welcome for one or two weeks of the program. There is limited space so always sign up ahead of time to guarantee a spot in the ensemble for the week or weeks desired.
